what's this noise?

Here's the lowdown....88 000 Km, 2000 year, automatic trans, 4x4, the brakes were JUST replaced.....

so starting from a STOP i hear a terrible grinding noise from the front passenger side. You can hear the grind until about 5 KPH, then it dies down as speed increases. It is only REALLY REALLY loud at 5 KPH and below. Even on the highway you can still hear it if you're driving beside the concrete baracade so something is rubbing constantly. It almost sounds exactly like when you're driving with dead brake pads, and the metal wear indicators are touching the rotor.

I'm guessing it is the heatsheild rubbing on something. Perhaps the rotor. I don't think that there is anything else under there that could make that kind of sound. Bad balljoints? no. Hubs? No, those are more of a rumbly noise.

My money is on a tweaked dust shield. Slide under there with a flashlight and have a look. You can bend the shield back into place by hand.

I had something just like that on my old truck, it ended up being the bearings, but if you want to check that, just lift the front in the air and spin the tires. If it does the grinding all the time that might be your best bet to check it anyway.

If its bearings, the hub will be hot after driving. Warm is ok, hot is not.
