Every one that I have ever read seems to think that 6.5" are the correct size for the front.

Exclamation

in my 1997 SR5, i have 6.5" speakers. it's the correct depth according to Best Buy, Circuit City, Meyer Emco, and Crutchfield. Now as for the back Door, the 97 SR5 actually has a 4" speaker. I had to dremel out a hole in the plastic mounting board, so i could get my 5 1/4" to fit in the rear doors. the guys were probably BS'in you. the install is pretty easy. e-mail me at jwpark@andrew.cmu.edu if you need any help. i've taken my door panels out many times to do speaker stuff, so i'd be glad to help.

Doh, i totally forgot.

it MAY depend on what depth speakers you're trying to install. it SHOULDN'T make a difference, but there's a slight chance, if they're too deep, it may not fit. This is very doubtful however. Also some speaker companies have odd sizing problems. I know when i installed 5 1/4's in the rear door of my friend's grand cherokee, we had to drill through the metal part of the door. because they were too big. (5 1/4" was the recommended size to install in the rear door)

So it MAY depend on the brand of speaker you were trying to install. however i highly doubt it. the openings in the front doors are 6.5" for the speakers in YOUR 96 sr5 limited 4-runner. I know because my dad has one, and i installed my old 6.5" pioneer two ways in his.

i hope this helps

okay, i'm starting to look like a dumbass now.

in the first reply, i was trying to say that 6.5 is the right diameter. not depth.

in the second reply i was trying to say that even though 6.5 is the right diameter, you may run into depth issues if you have High end speakers. (the magnets tend to get pretty big on the nicer speakers)

in the second reply i was also trying to say that even though the box the speakers come in may say 6.5, it may be some odd sizing chart that the company uses, hence the reference to the install i did on my friend's grand cherokee.

overall, i still think it was the company trying to screw you over the install. Holiday times do get kinda hectic, and they're probably just trying to bump you off their "to do" list.

i'm sorry that this is all so confusing. it's finals week for me right now, and i'm dead tired, and nowhere near done with all the work i need to do

yeah, the door panels must come off. it seems kinda tricky at first, but once you're actually doing it, it's a fairly easy process.

http://www.hboss.net/4runner/door-panel-removal.htm

this page has good pictures to go with it. you can feel free to e-mail me at jwpark@andrew.cmu.edu if you have any further questions.

oh, and i have no idea who's website that is, i just did a google search for "4runner door panel"

good luck!
