I also have a 1994 Toyota 4Runner and have been struggling these past few weeks to inexpensively upgrade my system. Here’s what I’ve discovered assuming you want to upgrade to the best sound possible for the least amount of money and hassle. My objective was to implement all components stealthly to maximize security and space. Also note, my 1994 4Runner had the premium six speaker sound system.

I originally purchased some Boston CX4’s (had to cut off two mounting ears to snuggly attach to speaker pod for this but later upgraded to some Eclipse 8052 component speakers in the front door panels. While the Eclipse speakers sound great, given the time and cost of doing the custom front door component install (the 1994’s don’t seem to anticipate front door speakers), I wish I’d just kept my Boston CX4’s in the front dash. I later added an 8” JBL Grand Touring Series subwoofer with a small custom-made box in the right rear-side storage compartment. The subwoofer addition greatly compensated for the lack of deep base in the front dash 4” speakers. I have another JBL 8” subwoofer I’m considering adding to the left storage compartment. I also installed some old Lanzar Pro 6.5” midwoofers in the right rear side panels and continue to run the stock top rear tweeters. I custom made some speaker mounts for these 6.5” woofers and attached them with the brackets from the rear side panel speaker boxes (note my boxes had the little amplifiers in each box). I got carried away and also purchased some JL Audio VR600-Csi component speakers for the rear but haven’t yet decided if I like them better than the Lanzar Pro/stock tweeter combination.

In retrospect, I would have just put the Boston 4” speakers in both the front dash speaker pods and the rear side panel speaker pods and added the JBL subwoofer. Once again, this recommendation assumes the objective is to maximize sound quality for the absolute least amount of money, hassle, and space loss. Obviously there a better upgrade options but the cost/hassle factor would increase dramatically.

Hope this rambling helps.
