My sway bar discos are pretty well rusted in place. If I have to cut them off and replace them I will, but I'd prefer not to. I've soaked the wing nut with PB Blaster a few times but can't get it to budge. Any other tips? I was thinking about a torch, but...

 

keep soaking it for a day or so .. also put a pair of locking pliers on there, and tap the pliers with a hammer to open it up some ... but PB blast for a day or so as well

as odd as this sounds, tabasco sauce works for me. i learned it from one of the navy guys on the forum. forget his name. why not try this overnight: soak a rag in tabasco, wrap that around the parts that need to be soaked, re-soak it again, wrap it up in plastic to prevent moisture loss, and give it a tug the next morning.

I've, heard of people using paraffin wax (sometimes called canning wax) or and old candle to loosen stuck bolts/nuts. The procedure is: Heat the bolt with a propane torch until it's good and hot - starting to glow red if it's really stuck. Next touch the threads with the wax so the wax wicks into the stuck threads area. Then see if it comes out. I'm told it works very well but be careful you don't get a "flame on" situation from the PB Blaster.

 

If you end up having to use a small hand-held DIY torch, get a can of MAPP gas, it gets much hotter than propane.

 

Use a torch, heat that nut up red hot and it will break loose!!

That's true. I was just thinking of the first torch that came to mind. Of course if you have a cutting torch, just zap that sucker off!

A large pair of vice grips should do the trick. It worked for me. Or even try a pair on each "wing" if you can find the room to swing em.

 

If you guys would quit fixing your leaky oil pan gaskets and whatnot, none of your stuff would ever get rusty. Mine is all nice and oily/greasy with a protective coating of grime and mud too - nothing gets stuck or rusty....

 

blaster didnt work right away? use more blaster. it is more effective than anything anyone else has posted in this thread, except using a temperature delta to free the parts.

tabasco sauce contains vinegar, a small amount of capsacin(sp?), maybe some citric acid, and probably red #5 or something. uh, kinda sounds like an old sailor's tale . the blaster will work better than paraffin as well, wd-40 is paraffin with a kerosene carrier and doesnt do dick to free rusted parts.

soak a rag in blaster, wrap around your parts, soak some more, then leave it soaking for a couple days, resoaking whenever you walk by (use drip pan).

then get the biggest lever arm you can and give it hell.

Tabasco is vinegar, ground red chiles and salt. Let's don't go into what's in the ground red chiles, but vinegar (acetic acid) and salt (sodium chloride) combined are commonly used to react with oxides. Kids usually discover that hot sauce (picante, pico de gallo, tabasco) make pennies shiny again. Iron is more active than copper. So yes, the old sailors tale will probably work on pure iron rust (Fe2O3), but alloys of iron will make the reactions more difficult to predict. Try it if you want, but the PB Blaster you've sprayed on will probably protect the iron somewhat.

 

OK, thanks for the tips guys. I'm going to try the PBed rag idea all weekend. Hopefully that will work.
