What to do with leftover cv

So I just replaced my cv and when I bought the new one from checker they didn't require a core so now I have a cv that isn't necessarily broken, but the boot ripped on the outer joint and it has seized. What would YOU do if you had this laying around, I hate to throw it away but not sure if its worth rebuilding.

Buy some boots and re-build it...you'll learn something and have a spare CV, Regardless of it's condition it should get you out of a bind.

how much does it cost to rebuild, I know you have to use the 2 different greases, aren't those pretty expensive since you have to get them from the dealer?

I scored 2 sets of boots and grease from the dealer for $20.00. I did not use the supplied grease, I used some hi-temp Tacna RX grease by Texaco...pretty much EP wheel bearing grease. Why throw away a good spare?

I say rebuild it as well. If you aren't interested in reubilding it I will take it off of your hands for a fair price.

Hey slc how did that grease work out for ya? i've heard that only the stock grease really works...maybe i'm crazy. Jim if I don't end up rebuilding it you'll be the first to know.

Edit: I was thinking, I know this is dishonest and i won't do it, but whats to keep me from taking the broken one over to checker and being like hey I need a new one this one you sold me broke already. Lol just a thought, again I'm not going to do it!

Dude, rebuilding it is a good option, however, you can run for a long time on a cv with a ripped boot, so even if you don't rebuild it, shove some grease in it, wrap that boot in duct tape, and hang onto it for a spare. If you actually break on on a trail, you will really appreciate that spare.

The Tacna grease has been great, very tacky and stays put, I have had it in there for over a year and none of it has slung out from under the boots. When cold it may be a little stiff but it's a great Extreme Pressure lube, most Truck drivers and heavy equipment operators will know what I'm talking about.

Thanks, I have manual hubs too...I was just looking to get this for a buddy. You should post them up, they will sell for about $50 each if they are in good condition.

I know you can run a while w/ a ripped boot, I did that I guess because the outer joint has siezed and does not pivot any more, I bought the car used and the guy had put rubber cement over the rip to make it look good. 2 months later all of the grease is gone and it seized creating a thunk as I drove.
