What to check for in Front Diff quality?

Im close to buying a 4x4 4runner from someone on this board, but he is not willing to take it and have it checked out for me at a dealer..Im not comfortable with buying a truck that is 4x4 and not knowing for a fact that the front is in good shape...Is having it engaged offroad without issue a test that would qualify it as having a clean bill of health?? What should be concerns be here? It is a 96 with 103k

Walk away from this 'deal'. If the seller won't allow a dealer to check it out and give you an unbiased report, I suspect that there is something wrong with it that he knows about, and you do not, YET. Remember the popular saying - 'Act in haste, repent in leisure.'?

The seller could be reluctant to take the truck to the stealer due to $$ reasons, If they refuse to take it to the dealer after you offer to pay for a mechanic to look at it... RUN don't walk.
