What is backspacing?

If my stock wheels have a backspacing of 4.75 or something, would I need a like 3.5 or something lower to gain a wider stance? I'm totaly confused still

Yes, changing from a 4.75 BS to a 3.5 BS would move your tires out 1.25 inches (each side of course). This would improve your stability, but may cause rubbing issues with body parts.
