What about these diesel engines for a conversion?

Hey all,
Somebody had a tread going a bit ago about importing Toyota diesel engines. Well, that got me wondering what American engines are out that may fit into the Toyota's engine bay. Here's what I found:

Detroit Diesel
4.0L--Twin turbo and intercooled 60* V6
375lb torque @ 2000RPM
235hp @ 4000RPM
Dimensions: Length=21in
Width=25in
Height=31in
Weight=638lb (no accessories)
http://www.detroitdiesel.com/public/specs/3SA545.pdf

3.0L--Turbo and intercooled 60* V6
470Nm @ 1800(sorry not sure what that comes to in lb/ft)
210hp @ 4000RPM
Dimensions: Length=~21in
Width=~27in
Height=~28in
Weight=462-529lbs
http://www.detroitdiesel.com/public/specs/3SA549.pdf

Cummins Diesel
3.9L--Turbo I4 (intercooled?)
420lb torque @ 1700RPM
170hp @ 2300RPM
Dimensions: ?
Weight=773lb with accessories http://www.cummins.com/na/pdf/en/pro...et/4000161.pdf

That's it. I also checked out CAT's website, but smallest engine I could find was 7.1L. I'm not sure if these could fit in the engine bay, but thought I'd post it for those who might be interested. Seems pretty neat to me.

Well, have fun all.

That 3.0 L Detroit looks interesting. I wasn't aware there were any V6 diesels. It puts out more HP than the gas. I'd have to do the conversions on the torque, but I think it's safe to say it puts out more.

Assuming that the Nm to ftlb ratio is linear....

470Nm ~= 348ft lbs of torque....

I dont know the exact conversion cuz I didnt feel like looking it up but it gives ya an idea

The big challenge is if it will bolt up to a Toy tranny and engine mounts.

Yeah, I suppose that would be the biggest obstacle. A person would probably have to relocate the mounts. As for the trannys, Allison builds a lot of auto transmissions for a bunch of diesel engines. Wouldn't surprise me if they had one for these models. I think the majority of there trannys for smaller diesel engines are 5 speed auto. GM uses a 5sp auto Allison tranny in their trucks with the 6.6 Duramax (Isuzu) diesels. (little tid bit there for you all ) I'll see if I can come up with some info on the tranny issue.

Don't gas engines have smaller fuel fill holes than diesel engines so people don't put diesel in their gas cars? That would be another little thing to think about.

Thanks for doing that conversion Bumpin' Yota.

Well, have fun all.

I STILL wanna see a 7.1 L cat/ringhaver engine in a yota! If toyota did that and then Banks made a power pak for it, THEN I'd buy a diesel hands down!
