What is this??? 2003 SR5

I was checking out the under side of my new 03 4x4 4Runner and found something attached my transfer case. Take a look at the 2 pics at my site below under the 03 SR5 caption and let me know what you think.

Thanks

Some type of balancer that reduces vibration I believe.

now that i can see the pic, I have no idea....

I even checked under my 4runner right now to see if I have it. Don't have it on mine. Must be a v6 thing? Gotta say you've stumped me!

OK, I have one, so it must be a V6 thing (although yours is cleaner than mine ).

But I have no clue what it is.

I have one on my '98, looks exactly the same. I agree with balance weight.

So I guess the consensus is that it is a balancer of some sort? I guess that since the V8's are full time AWD they may not need balancing?
Secondly I realized today that the 03 stock receiver (hitch) appears to be removable. Hopefully soon there will be a deeper one available.

Thanks again

It's called a Tuned Mass Dampener designed to cancel out the secondary harmonic vibrations that the V6 produces around 2500rpms.

Let me be the level headed one to appologize for my immature compatriots. They get carried away sometimes and have to be reeled back in. I don't beleive that Yotatech actually advocates this kind of ridiculous behavior.

It's actually a Finnigan Pin. I have one on my '63 4-door Z-28 convertable. It prevents the capacitor from contaminating the blinker fluid with flux, thus leaking into the muffler bearings and setting off the bomb. This can be very dangerous and that is why Toyota finally wised up and started putting them in the new 4Runners.

Whatever it is, it looks like it would get knocked off or dented and destroyed pretty easily on a trail. Toyota made 4x4s for over 20 years without them. I wonder what they screwed up on the newest ones to make that thing necessary. Harmonic transfer case balancer? WTF???

I was going to guess it was the cockpit voice recorder or the filght data recorder... The Black Box.
