Weird engine whine

I have a '98 4-cyl 4Runner auto. It has about 140K miles on it. I am hearing an engine whine that seems to follow my pressing the gas pedal. It kinda sounds like a cross between a whine and the engine fan blowing. Can you guys offer some advice on what things I should check or have checked?

Thanks!

I'll get the alternator checked, but it doesn't sound high pitched. Any other thoughts?

Use a mechanics stethoscope to narrow down where the sound it coming from.
When you find the offending part, you'll know right away.

Check your fan clutch. If you've got one.

Check your accessory pulley bearings on the front of the engine. Also check your power steering fluid level. Mine whined like a cat after my headgasket replacement because I forgot I had drained it

Had a similar whine on '96 Tacoma. Pitch changed according to engine speed.
Narrowed it down to either the tension pully/bearing assy on the compressor
or the compressor/bearing itself. Have not repaired yet. Loosened tension
on the idler/tension pulley to stop whine until I can fix.

bringin back a dead thread... having the same issue on my 3.4 (auto) I dont think it's power steering bc I can sit parked and rev my engine and it will whine. Maybe alternator, my truck died a couple times last week for some reason, and now this hmmm? My belt needs changed cus every time It's real cold outside my belt will chirp when I start it up. I'm thinkin maybe the bearing in the pulley has gone bad or possible fan clutch related. Any thoughts or suggestions? Need to get this fixed asap.
Never heard the outcome of the OP's problem and I'm assuming by now it's fixed.. what was the deal? Thanks

Well, I think I can cancel out the alternator. If you're looking at the engine it's coming from the left side of the engine. Maybe a pulley is going out?

Got some time today and stopped by the closest mechanic shop , Midas. Guy used a auto stethoscope or whatever it is called and we pinned it down to being the AC Tensioner Pulley. Guess bearing is bad on it, should be an easy fix.
