I'm looking into doing a V8 swap, can any of you shoot me some suggestions that would fit good in a 92 4Runner? Price quotes for labor would also be appreciated if anyone could help me out. I'm not trying to go into swapping the engine the wrong way....so spill it!!!!

 

350 SB chevy... and advanced adapters?

there is tons of stuff availble, i just dont remember who makes it... look into downey and allpro and marlin too

We have a Chevy 350 in our Runner. Plenty of stuff available to make it work well. However, a Ford 302 I've heard is much narrower, and has the distributor in the front, so it fits a lot better.

 

Did you do the swap yourself? Do you know any place I could find an engine+tranny thats not murder?

 

Would the Ford 302 fit in a 2nd Gen?

 

A 92 Runner, which is the vehicle that was originally asked about, is a 2nd gen. Just FYI.

I know that But your 350 is in a 1st Gen, right? I assumed you were still talking about 1st gens.

Yeah, our Runner with the 350 is a 1st gen, but the 2nd gen engine compartment is pretty much the same, so it still fits just as well. As for our swap, the guy who had the truck before us did the swap, but got tired of it and just kind of "got it running" to sell it. We took everything out, and did it over again. Downey makes headers that work well for this setup, and Downey and Advance Adapters, and I believe All-Pro off road has all the adapters to make everything bolt up perfectly. The new motor and new 700R4 tranny came from Jasper. Can't remember the price. All in all, the swap porbably cost about 7k, but could probably be done cheaper...

This is not a standard mechanical repair like a brake job - it's pure custom work. So you are not going to see "standard labor charges." It is ordinarily a do-it-yourself type of project. If you must pay to have it done, find a shop that has done a bunch of em or the labor charges will be insane!

For motors- depends on your desires and pocketbook. You can find a good running engine in a wrecking yard for $300 or buy an engine new for $4000, or $10,000 - it's up to you. Almost any V8 can be swapped in, depending on your determination and budget. Start by looking at the adapters available from the companies mentioned above. You can retain your transmission or go with another one that matches the V8 (like Chevy 350/700R4 combo etc.)

There are many potentially good swaps available - Chev and Buick v6, Chev and Ford V8, Supra motors, Lexus V8, to name some.

What about that twin turbo 3.4(?) that Gadget and F2Üning had worked on? I just looked at both sites and didn't see it.

 

how bout an 8.1L vortec jk, has anyone considered and LS1? they do get unbelievable gas mileage for a v8 + their price is getting cheaper too

 

LT1 works too. We almost bought a 'Runner with one of those in it, but decided to keep ours with the 350. Old-school...

 

you can always go w/ a s/c'd 3.4
good power and the swap is WELL documented. I am very pleased with the power+gearing.
It might be cheaper (relative term)

 

302 or 351w will fit nicely if i did it again i would go with a 5.0 out of a 87-94 mustang
