Used Engine

Ok, let's say you have a used, low mileage (less than 60k) 3.0 in your shop, getting ready to drop into the place your broken 3.0 used to sit. Withou getting into 3.0/3.4/4.3 scene, what would you do to that engine, prior to depositing it in the engine bay?

You know, all the hard to reach stuff, like changing all 6 sparkplugs, clean up any gunk, check seals etc...

I'm re-installing my original intake manifold and above, since I know those parts to be in good condition. I just wanna know what else should be taken care of, while the engine sits on a stand, and not in that knuckle-bashing suitcase that sits in front of the driver

The timing belt was done less than 500 miles prior to the engine being removed, so that's out of the way, anyway. Not so sure about the waterpump and idlers though. Is there a good way to check these?

Thanks,
oh look, I'm a 'Contributing Member' now!!!!
Those sliders are gonna look pretty cool with my newused engine, clutch and rear window!!!!

Let's see - adjust the valves if that hasn't been done recently, new TPS, new waterpump if it doesn't look like it will make it to the next timing belt replacement, new PCV valve, electric fan, HEADGASKET? , EGR valve and any other mods you can justify - headers, cams, ignition system...

And THANKS for contributing.

I would definately replace both crankshaft seals and the oil seal on the input shaft of the gearbox. And check the clutch. All the rest can be reached when the engine is in place.

Clutch, flexplate and bearing are new. I like the crankshaft and input seal idea!

Don't really want to get down to the headgasket, but if i go that far I might as well do the waterpump. I'll have a better idea on Friday.

under 60k, i wouldnt touch anything. new plugs, wires, & cap. if i had the money i would have taken the stock exhaust off so i could have put the headers on, but oh well, now i get to pull it the hard way.

heads

I would make sure the valve stem seals and valves are in good shape before I installed the engine. If the used engine hasn;t been maintained properly then you will soon regret it.
