upgrading alternator wire / wiring
I have a mean-green 130 amp alternator on the way and I want to also upgrade the stock charging wires when I do the swap. I looked at the system wiring diagrams and the connection between the alternator and the battery is not direct. On my 92, the factory book shows that two wires go from the alt: #1 goes to "80A alt fuse" then to the battery via main fusible link (14gauge). #2 goes to "AMI 40A fuse" and then connects to the #1 wire right before it connects to the "alt 80a fuse". What is the purpose of this second wire? is it just another path? or is it some return wire?
I want to upgrade the wire from the alt to the battery and the main ground wire. I've got the ground wires located, but I just need advice on if I should just upgrade alt wire #1 or both #1 and #2. Also, could I just run a new 4 gauge wire from the alt to the battery (of course with a circuit breaker in between somewhere)? This would be the easiest by far! (since I have a battery isolator and the wires are connected to posts so I would not need to splice into the existing alt wire to add a new one... just put a second ring terminal on the post and crimp the new wire and then hook it to the battery.
