Has anyone ever used a universal O2 sensor. These are the ones that you have to splice into the old wiring harness to hook up. The reason I ask is the universal ones run $60 an OEM one runs $140. If anyone has experience with these it would be a great help. Thanks Bryan

 

Many have had problems with the universal type sensors....I personally stay away from them.
If this is for a 3rd gen, you can go to gadget's site and order a new OEM at a great price.

i had the same thing bought a good quality universal, still the engine light came on after clearing codes etc

bought one from the dealer and the engine light has been out since, i would only use toyota for a sensor like this for now on

 

I guess I should have mentioned it's on an 1989 with a 3.0. Is thier anyway to test these O2 sensors. The book I have didn't mention any way of testing them or I was looking in the wrong spot. Thanks Bryan

 

The O2 sensor is tough to test because they need to be tested while hot.
You can hook up leads and verify voltages that way but they may fluctuate too fast to see on a multi meter.
Is there a reason you are replacing yours?

 

I actually just replaced my oem one with a universal... just take your time in doing the wires as to not cross any wires... I bought a Bosch universal (after I failed smog)... anyway, I got it... spliced the wires, installed it and now my emissions are phenomenally low. Anyway, like I said... just take your time. You don't actually cut the wiring harness... you cut off the connector from the old o2 sensor, at least with the Bosch universal. Had it called for cutting the actual vehicle's wiring, I wouldn't have bought the universal. What year is your Toyota? If you need any other help feel free to hit me up... by the way... I just moved from Albuquerque like 2 years ago. How long have you lived in R.R.?

 

Thanks for all of the replies. I have lived out here since July of 02 this time. I was here from 93 to 96 the first time. I still don't know if it my O2 sensor thats bad or not just trying to find out some info. Thanks again Bryan

 

Cool cool... what year do you have? If it's a 2nd gen like mine you can just put a paper clip between the Te1 and E1 slots in the diagnostic box. Let me know the year and I'll help you out!
