Hey, Those are Great! So when do you think it will be ready to leave the parking lot? After 9 years and a solid axle conversion you would think it would be ready for something more than pavement?

I guess all that matters is that you put a good show on with the RTI ramp in a parking lot.

Ok, to keep things simple here goes:

1. You don't need a sway bar with 4 leaf springs.

2. You don't need a sway bar with 2 leaf springs and 2 coils.

3. You don't need a sway bar with 2 torsion bars and 2 coils.

4. Unless you want to die, you need a sway bar with 4 coils.

The coil springs on the 3rd gen 4runners are very very soft. The truck will lean and sway in an extremely unsafe manner. Greatly increaseing the odds of rolling.

My point was that you would not know this, because you have never owned a rack and pinion equiped Toyota.

 

I just wanted to say to all you guys who take your $40k vehicles out into what to me seems like the most precarious and threatening situations jeopardizing limb and vehicle, you've got real GUTS! It must be an awesome HIGH to do what you do but boy does it take OO's.

I get nervous when I hand the keys to a vallet attendent or drive into a big city with my 4R. I think I would even be scared to drive my 4R up onto one of those ramps in a parking lot.

I do need a way bar with 4 leafs, hence the reason why Toyota puts them on. I just choose not to use them. Not to trying to make comparisons as I've not driven a 3rd gen, by my leafs are probably far softer that the stock 4 coil suspension in a 3rd gen 4Runner. My wife maxes the 45 inclinometer pulling out of the church!

In fact, all those rigs come with sway bars so technically you do probably need them.

Where I disagree with you is that sensibly driven a 3rd gen 4Runner is not going to flex and sway more than my high articulation 2nd gen and for the person that started this thread, it's not a panic situation to drive his rig until he gets the replacement parts. The only place where this would become important is in an accident avoidance type situation where a swaybar.

I still feel that if someone is serious about wheeling their rig, they will need quick disconnects and in my experience, they eventually get rid of these when they realize that it's not so bad without a sway bar.

BTW, I much prefer this line of debate.
