turning off check engine light

Hi All,

Newb question. I've tried searches but found nothing specific on how to turn off the check engine light. Truck is a 97 4runner with the 3.4.

My truck was misfiring due to old spark plugs and within a few minutes the check engine light came on. I changed the spark plugs and she runs great with no more misfires, BUT the "check engine" light stays on. How do I get the check engine light to turn off now that it runs great? I've searched "reset computer" and "check engine light" but there were no specifics on how to do it.

Please help the mechanical newb. And Happy New Year!!!

Cheers

disconnect the battery for 15 minutes or clear it with a OBD scanner. i think autozone and advance auto do it for free if you don't have one

You can go to just about any auto parts store (not sure what they have up north) and they can read what code triggered the CEL and reset it for you. They don't charge for this.

I pulled the ecu fuse on mine for about 10 seconds. I had a 2nd gen when I did that but it'll probably do the same for you. Or pull the battery cable for a bit.
