Red face Turn Signal when braking

Yesterday my right turn signal started coming on (solid) when I press on my brakes. When i turn the left turn signal on, the right turn signal goes solid as well while the left one is blinking. I have a 1990 4Runner. I changed the bulbs last night and that didnt help. Any ideas? Anyone know where the relay for the Turn Signals or Brakes are?

Thanks,
RasMG

I had the exact same problem on my '91. What it ended up being was the converter for my trailer lights had a short in it.

In a nut shell. What the converter is used for is to convert the dual lights (blinker and brake/parking light) into one wire like you would have on most trailers. And what can happen especially if it gets wet is it can cause a feedback through the system ie pushing your brakes sends a loop back to your blinker.

My converter was located under the rig near the rear bumper, actually on the bumper, but I don't think mine had the factory tow pkg, so yours might be different.

Either way it is a pretty easy fix and a new converter only cost me about $20.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Hmm.. I have a tow package (and I dont believe it is a factory one either). It has 4 wires coming out into the plug. I looked underneath and all 4 wires continue over to the side of the car and then go into the metal frame so I cant really follow them much anymore. The wires on the adapter are spliced into the 4 wires that continue up into the frame. This still seams like it could be the problem because I know the adapter doesnt work anymore from backing our boat into the salt water. I cut the wires at the splices but it didnt seem to help any. Im not sure where the converter (from 1 wire to 4) is that you are refering to thought. Maybe there isnt one?

Thanks,
RasMG

I'm almost positive that there has to be one, from what a mechanic friend of mine told me, unless the previous owner did something unique. Maybe the converter box isn't as large as the one I had, so its not as obvious.

The only other thing that I can really think of is that the wires were spliced to my rear lights behind those rear access panels in the "trunk", or maybe check under the carpet in the very back, mine ran under there for a little distance.

It will just take some persistance, but I'm SURE that is what your problem is. Maybe call a dealership and ask where the factory location is.

Let me know how it goes.

Got it fixed! You were right. It was the contoller for the tow package wiring. The box was located behind the rear sidepanel on the inside of the car right next to the right rear blinker. I just unspliced it for now and now everything works great. (except for the tow light of coarse hehe.. they dont work so good.) Thanks for your help.
