tundra or tacoma?

well, i finally converted my gf's dad into ditching american vehicles and buying a yota. he wants either a tundra or a tacoma but needs help deciding which would better suit his needs. so i told him i'd ask you guys.

1. he has a small fishing boat that he'll need to tow, about 1500 lbs.
2. needs to carry 3 people (1 driver, 2 passengers)
3. WANTS to have a full bed for reasons unknown. (i told him to just borrow a trailer for the extreme rare occasions that he would need to haul plywood)
4. doesn't have tons of money (this would obviously make him lean towards the tacoma)

he's worried that the V6 as well as the tranny won't be able to tow the 1500 lb boat a few times a year without giving it much problems. (he's had a lot of tranny problems in recent history). i told him from what i know that a tacoma would be better. what do you guys think?

Yep, the double-cab Tacoma does not have a full-size bed anyway. So, he would have to go with the xtra cab... I used to put people that I didn't like in the xtra cab of my Tacoma as a form of Chinese torture. Does that tell you anything?

Another vote for the Tundra.

I have a DC tacoma, and it's awsome. I'd vote for that! but it does have a short bed. Personally, I find it fine for trips to homedepot -- but it's not a fullsize bed.

The tundra is weak, imho... If he wants a full-size but wants to stay clear of american-stuff, then at least check out the Nissan Titan... I love my taco like crazy -- but if I ever needed a fullsize, the Titan gets my first look.

Just curious what you mean. I raced a couple Tundra V8's with my Tacoma Limited Auto, and they would pull me every time starting at about 45MPH on. I could never catch them after 45MPH.

Or do you mean weak when comparing the Tundra to the Domestic and now import (Titan) V8's?

I mean weak when compared to what else you could get. The Nissan Titan is the same price, has an awsome engine, looks great, is nice and big, and if you're not gonna get a yota, the nissan sure comes second in my book for reliability.

Look at the specs on the Titan, and the Tundra simply can't compete.

Well I agree with the power aspect, and comparing the Tundra and the Titan. However, the Titan is pretty "unique" looking (see ugly) IMO. But you do have good points. The Titan sounds downright mean going down the road. I am still trying to get used that big front end on it.

My dad has a 2001 Tundra V8 TRD 4x4... We took that thing to Baja last winter and holy ˟˟˟˟ its got power. We were cruising at 80mph, of course we traveled light, but, the engine and truck is just spectacular.

Id go with a Tundra, but, dont get the brand spanking new one, you can find some for good prices.

Theres just somethin about the Titan that I don't like, it looks cheap...maybe its the butt ugly chrome on the front or something but some about it just doesn't seem right.

The Tundra looks big, the overall quality is amazing and the reliability is out of this world. And it definately has enough power...it hauled our boat easier than my brothers brand new Ford F-150...I'm still trying to get him to trade that in for the Tundra but we'll see.

I just traded a Tundra X-cab for a Taco X-cab. I did it for fuel economy because I only haul things occasionally. I get about 5 mpg more with the V6 Taco, and I haul plywood sheets by propping them on the tailgate. It is more maneuverable in parking lots by far, and I prefer the seats and the ride. If you want to do a little math, the Taco has ever so slightly better HP/weight ratio than the Tundra, though I don't know if it can hang when the Tundra hits it's sweet spot power band at 45mph.

Love both trucks, but prefer the Taco. Especially if money is a consideration. Fuel adds up.
