I really can't afford to lose any gas mileage. Since I started back to school, all the commuting I'm doing has already hit my mileage for -1mpg on average. Since I'm not S/C'd yet, there would really be no benefits to installing it, and even if I was I want to do it up right, not half-ass it with a bandaid.

 

Unless you are getting low RPM pinging, then you don't need the TRD unit. Aside from that, the thermostat allows the engine to get up to the operating temp quicker by restricting coolant. Once the engine reaches the optimum temperature, the thermostat opens and allows the coolant to do it's work and keep the engine at that temp.

 

Okay. Thanks. That clears things up a bit. I'm due for a 60k checkup and was that I should consider replacing my thermostat at that time. But I'm not having any problems pinging,etc. Thanks for the help.

 

If you aren't pinging then don't change a thing (unless its for another of the same part).
