Dont do much wheeling, but plenty of deep snow, and slick road driving - now I have read up on a bunch of the posts on lsd's and still have come away wondering - would a detroit truterac or TRD LSD be a good add on to the fron differential of a 97 taco v6 5-spd with a rear locker for snow driving? Am I hurting snow performance in any way by adding the LSD to the front diff ? should I just save up and buy a ARB front locker or will this LSD do what I am looking, in tandem with the rear e-locker I allready have, for the snowwy confines of new england?

 

I had the TRD LSDs in both front and rear of my 85. I wouldn't do it again. On the one had, I could climb trees. If traction was available - it was amazing. But on ice and snow it was scary as hell. If you slipped even a little, the whole thing was loose and sliding. I learned to drive like a rally driver - kick out the back end and wait for it, then gas it - drifiting around the corners. (Not quite that bad, but nearly so...)

The LSDs were fine - it was having them in both ends on slippery roads that wasn't good.

 

I have always had the best luck on snowy and ice packed roads in just 4-Hi, both ends open. My old Ford pickup had a rear LSD and it did pretty good in 4-Hi, but every once in a while the back end would loose traction and go sideway when the LSD locked up, and that was with about 400 pounds of sand bags and tools in the bed. I can't imagine having both ends locked and driving in slick and snowy roads. I'd say stick with what you got and add about 250-300 pounds to the bed of your Taco for the winter...

 

I have that set up. An e-locker in the rear and TrueTrac in the front.

I haven't tried it in the snow though. This winter I hope to check it out and then I can offer some feedback. Off road on the rocks, sand and mud it does very well.
