I just put a newer 3.4 engine in my '97 Tacoma 4x4. The transmission whines in neutral and every gear but 4th. I got this truck with a blown engine so I was unable to hear the transmission before the new engine. The friend of mine I got it from said everything was fine with the transmission when it was parked. It sat for over two years with a bad engine.

I am wondering if I could have done anything wrong installing the engine to cause the transmission to make noise. When I searched for this problem, it seemed that a few other people were having transmission problems after installing a new engine. Could this be from the transmission sitting? Could it be something with the new engine or clutch I installed? The noise stops when the clutch is pressed, so I doubt it is the throwout or pilot bearings.

So you put the engine AND the tranny from the other rig into your truck? When is the last time you checked the fluid level in the tranny?

The tranny is the originial in the truck, just the engine is new. The fluid level was good, but very dirty so I changed it and the noise is still there.

Does anyone think I could have messed something up putting the engine in? Could it have got that way from sitting? Maybe it was going bad before I got it and no one noticed the noise?
