Transmission / T-case Compatibility 4wd Conversion
I have been reading all the posts and was hoping someone could answer this for me. I have a 97 2wd and was considering converting to 4wd. In looking for a T-Case and Transmission I noticed that the transmissions looked the same with the exception of the "tail housing" on the 2wd trans. When I say "tail housing" I mean the section of housing that bolts onto the back of the transmission that the rear drive shaft slides into on the 2wd. It almost looks like the tail housing could be unbolted and a T-Case could be bolted up to the 2wd transmission. The question is has anyone tried this and if so what were the issues? Bolt pattern wrong? Output shaft too short or long? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I think the 2WD tranny is an A340E. The 4WD tranny is an A340F. They're not compatible so you'll need to have a donor vehicle and swap
IIRC, Iceman601 did a 2WD to 4WD conversion and made a writeup about it.

Here is a writeup of switching the output shafts from the A340F (4wd) into the A340E (2wd) to accommodate for a T-case.
I swapped a transmission and tcase in a ford last weekend to get a feel for my 4wd conversion. Already have the new trans and tcase, now to work up the courage to do THAT again.
