transmission problems?

so for about 2 weeks now my 4runner has been acting funny. when i'm at a complete stop and go to accelerate it feels like the tires spin and it hops forward, then goes. also it will randomly when i first crank up and hit the gas, the rpm's will go up to around 4, but the speedometer stays around the 20-25 mph area and dosen't go. so i pull over, turn her off, then recrank and she will drive fine. i was wondering if this is all to do with my transmission or what?

I'm no expert with auto transmissions but that would be my first guess. Hows you fluid level? I had an '01 Grand Cherokee that would do nearly the same as you are describing and it was all due to low fluid. Oh and 2 months later I had to have the transmission rebuilt but that was a Jeep .

That part about you turning it off and restarting it and then it drives fine, makes me think it's a computer problem. But as I stated before I am no expert in this area by any means.

I was thinking the same thing, the transmissions in newer Runners are completely computer controlled. I would think if it was something mechanical in the trans it would be a problem all the time. Maybe check and see if there are any stored trouble codes, I hear Autozone will do it for free.
