Transmission Maintenance

Question for you guys,

When changing the automatic transmission oil on a 1996 4Runner is it required to replace the filter? I've read some where that it is not required to place. Does it ever need to be replaced at some time?

Thanks
JD

If you have the pan off anyway, I'd change it. You can get a new OEM one for $30-40 online. Not a bad idea to at least clean the magnets in the bottom of the pan every 100,000 miles or sooner.

Replacing the filter is not required but I had mines changed anyway. It was actually pretty dirty and I figured that I'd might as well since I had it opened up anyways.

If you don't replace the filter at least inspect it and clean it. Blast it with some brake cleaner from the top downwards, then flip it around and blast it from the bottom. And let it dry before reinstalling.

If you really want to get down, I recommend this:
