Transmission Issues

Hello All,

This is a first time post and I hope to find some advice.

I have a 99 4runner V6 4wd w/100K miles.

After the transmission is warmed up it does one of two things when coming to a complete stop about 90% of the time. 1. (aggresive braking) the transmission will clunk into 1st while simaltaneously the shifter pops forward after coming to a stop.
2. (smooth slow decceleration) the transmission will clunk ,along with shifter movement, after releasing the brake to start rolling again. It is as if it never shifted down to 1st on the deccel.

I can remedy the above by manually manipulating the shifter. I can either drop it into "2nd" manually on decceleration OR I can just add back pressure on the shifter while in "D" so that it cannot lunge forward when coming to a complete stop. This is driving me crazy.

Other than that the transmission operates flawlessly.

I have already flushed the transmission with new fluid but did not drop the pan.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This sounds like the classic driveshaft lube problem.
Get under the truck with a grease gun and grease all the zerk fittings on the driveline (esp the slipjoint!!!).
I bet the clunk will miraculously disappear....and the problem solved.

I got to tell you that after I read your solution I was a little skeptical. How could something so simple cure what I thought was potentially big trans trouble.

You my friend are a god. It WORKED. I can't thank you enough.

Now if I can only get you to solve what sounds like birds chirping at about 30 MPH and no foot on the pedal (coasting). Ad throttle and it goes away. Only does it when moving. No bird noise when static.

Anyway, thanks again. You made my day.

I am not a god by any means and I am certainly glad we helped you get your problem fixed.

As for your chirping birds, it sounds like it could be a couple of things.
1) belts.....spray the pulleys with some belt dressing and see if it still happens
2) Alternator bearing....this one is a last resort and not very likely
3) brakes....take a look and see how far down the pads are worn

See if any of those help you out.

I believe that this is also an indication that your rear breaks need adjustment.
Lack of breaking from the rear tires is what causes the rear diff to surge
forward in the first place.

That really worked. I had the rear brakes adjusted and that certainly helped. I had virtually no rear brake action before. Thanks a bunch.
