Which Transmission do I have?
Is there an easy way to determine which transmission I have on my
2002 Tacoma 3.4L automatic?
I've got the Toyota Serivce Manuals (on CD) and there appears
to be 3 possible auto-trany's that could be on my truck.
1. A340E
2. A340F
3. A44D
The manuals show diagrams with both the 3RZ-FE and 5VZ-FE engines
attached so the size engine you have doesn't seem to be the determining
factor.
Perhaps there is a label somewhere I can look at?

do you mean the ECT button?
i thought they all had those..........as far as i know the main difference is that the 4WD model has a built in transfer case (as in you cant seperate them to do a double t-case setup.......but i could be wrong)

service manual. If it is, I couldn't find it.
I wanted to know how much of my trany fluid was replaced with
a drain and fill. With the A340F I have, it looks like not much.
Here are the fluid capacities (for anyone that may want to know):
A340E - 7.6 qt capacity (drain removes 1.7 qts) 22%
A340F - 10.7 qt capacity (drain removes 2.1 qts) 20%
A44D - 6.9 qt capacity (drain removes 2.5 qts) 36%

It appears to be an "official copy" as the actual original PDF's used to
print the service manual are included, not scanned-in copies.
The great part is that since the files are originals you can search them
for key words. The part that sux is that there is no Table of contents or
index, so you must search to find anything.
The disc I have is specific to 2002 year Tacoma's.

Hey guys,
I read this when it first came out a few years ago, but just stumbled upon it again on the web.
It's an interesting overview of evolution of the A340 series of transmissions that is pretty accurate, for the most part.

I measured how much came out of my A340F and it was 3.5 qts.
Now it may have been a little overfilled from the drain and fill I did
last week but I think at the proper level at least 3 qts drain out.
This boosts the efficiency of a drain and fill to at least 28% on the A340F
assuming the capacity is correct.
I've done 3 drain and fills on the tranny over the past 2 weeks. I'll likely do
1 more next week and then feel pretty good about the condition of the
ATF. I know that this method is still not as good as a flush of the system
but I feel it is the next best thing.
Cost savings: $150 (dealer charge for flush) -vs- $11 (case of 12 qts ATF)
