Transfercase counterbalance

The transfercase on my '04 Tacoma has a weight on the pasenger side that hangs down. What is the purpose of this weight? I searched and couldn't find any info. If I remove it what if any problems might I see? Just wondering, cause I bent it clear around this last weekend!

It is not a counter balance, its a vibration dampner.

So, to keep down vibration at higher speeds? Do you know if it would cause any serious problems removing it?

That rubber coated weight is a "drive train dampener".Toyota put these type of weights on lots of different vehicals,They are basically a band-aid from a harmonic frequency problem during testing.Sometimes the "dampener" is bolted to transmissions/transfer cases/frames/exhaust systems..You will not hurt anything by taking it off,but you will possibly feel vibrations (vibrations that the dampener is trying to minimise) from the drivetrain under certain conditions.
