Transfer Case Leak
I was looking into the transfer case seals that you would change on a 99 4runner. Thee was a thread a little while back where somene had 5? changed I was curious if anyone had the part numbers or knew which seals where changed. I think it is my top seal where the one touch system meets the case itself. Anyone have this problem or any ideas?

I have a 98 Limited V6 4X4 w/Auto trans and had a leak fixed a couple days ago by the dealer. Fluid was leaking between the transfer case and transmission. After the transfer case was removed, the leak was found to be coming from the output shaft seal on the transmission. This seal and the input shaft seal were replaced on the transfer case. Total cost to me was $451. The part numbers are
90311-4007 Seal, type T oil $14.84
90311-40021 Seal, type T oil $14.93
Hope this helps - Mike

The vehicle was always garaged and never showed signs of a leak. I was only putting 30 miles each way to work and now have 116K on it.
I didn't notice it until I changed out the transfer case fluid and found only a cup worth or so in it. After refilling, I put cardboard under it. It leaked only a couple drops every few days/week. There was gear oil over the top of the transfer case leaking down leaving the drops. It looked like it was coming from the top of the case dripping down where the factory puts all the orange FIPG, and then back onto the small guard.
I thought/hoped it was the front output seal going to the front shaft, so I replaced it. No leak noticed for 1 week. Then, I took a trip of 180 miles last week one way, and after I returned I noticed a couple drops on the cardbord. I looked under to find the gas tank, cross member, muffler and exhaust, rear axle and both rear hubs painted with gear lube. Furthest forward, it was dripping from the case where the halves come together and blowing back under the truck. Surprisingly the transfer case wasn't that empty. A couple of squirts and it was full. I pulled the front shaft to ensure I didn't screw things up when I replaced the front seal, and it was completely dry anround it. apperently it only blows gear oil on long trips, which explains why I didn't notice it sooner.
Being past my comfortable level of maintenance skill, I took it in..you know the rest. Good Luck - Mike
