Trailer hitch cover mod
#1
Due to lack of funds for real mods and enhancements for my 4Runner, I've stooped to the level of modding ridiculous things... But I guess it's not totally useless.
Sick of the Toyota trailer hitch cover being stolen or lost on the trail? I know I am! (actually I'm not but it's a good pitch)
Spend about 30 minutes making this thing after buying a new cover today.

I used two pieces of 1 1/2" angle iron and welded a box out of them, but it's probably easier to just buy a 1 1/2" box. I made it 5" long, but it could be easily 2.5" shorter. I had big thoughts of making it a spare key holder but it didn't work out. Next I had to grind down the end of the box where the cover was going around, because the cover squeezes down and it won't fit if you don't grind it a little.
After that, a 1/2" hole was marked and drilled straight through. I am using a 1/2" locking pin on the hitch even though the hole is 5/8"... I'm not using the pin for towing or anything.
Now I had to mark where I wanted my holes to be (carefully placed so the rivets stayed out of the way), and drill, then rivet the holes. I did 3 holes, one on top and one on the left and right sides. There's no clearance on the bottom of the cover for a rivet, but 3 is plenty.

Works like a champ and now I need to find something else to do.
