I am having the hardest time finding anyone that carries a can-back top for a 1993 Toyota P/U ext cab with the regular bed.
Does anybody know who carries them?
Is Can-Back even in business still?
Does anybody have one they want to sell?

have you tried www.soft-top.com? They cary can-back. from what I have read (here and other forums) is that can-back is still in business. I think if you search on here you can find the thread.

 

Those things are nice...wish I could afford one, and take the 3 month wait. But I guess compared to a nice fiberglass one its not a bad price...Good Luck

Thanks for the replies guys. soft top/ truck candy which is the same company didn't have my truck listed and the first time I called several weeks ago I got some idiot who was telling me that a '93 was a tacoma and that they did not carry the top for that truck. Well of course they don't carry a top for a 1993 tacoma. Anyhow, I talked to Brian this time, really nice guy and knows his stuff, and he said that for my truck with the can-back, 3 bar roof rack (225lb capacity), and roll up kit it would be $1600. That may seem like a lot, and it is, but for the fiberglass top that I want it's only $300 more expensice and comes with the roof rack already. So I will place my order here in the next couple of weeks and wait 4 months till I get it. Yeah, I know 4 months is long, but there are only a couple of things I would wait for and this is one of them. I can't wait. Thanks again for your help guys.

i'm making a kinda half-canback myself right now basically for free using some 1x1 steel tubing sitting around my garage. its not going to have a canvas or anything, just a skeleton but it will hold the spare tire above the roof line and have a light bar on the front of it. I started by fabbing a square steel grid (going to be the "roof") and welded on a light bar at the front and grab bars on each side. all i really have left to do is build the mounts so that it attaches to the top of the bed rails and paint it. I won't really have time to finish it for about another month but i will take some pics this weekend when i go home from school and more when i finish it.

 

if you search there is a lot of info about them. it takes a welder and a sewing machine... or a friend and a mom but it really isnt that hard. i'm 19 and i thought it was pretty easy. body lift was harder.



here is mine so you can judge if you think it's worth 1/10 of canback price. i still need to get the snaps put into the side flaps - for now i just keep them rolled up under that decorative piece.

 

Aw man, that looks great! What did you use for the frame? Is that all welded, or is it "bolt together"? At anyrate, my likey!

 

As soon as it gets nice again, I'm going to work on making my custom soft top (for my 4Runner). I will use some EMT electrical conduit for the frame. Not sure on the material, probably sunbrella. A close friend of mine is a pro with a sewing machine, so if she agrees to sew it up for me, that would rock.

If it turns out good enough, I might make a few extra ones and sell them.

 

frame = 3/4 conduit (about 4-5 10 foot pieces) and a conduit bender - bend the hoops to match the shape of the cab, grind off the galvanizeation and weld it to some tabs and drill some holes in the tabs for bolts.

cut four 3 foot sections and pinch the ends to go between the hoops.


buy some 1x2 rectangle tube (or pvc crown molding like i used) and bolt the hoops to it after bolting it to the bed. this serves as a place to mount snaps so that you dont have to drill 50 snaps into the bed.

Awesome top! Neat, clean design. Is there any way you can post a closeup of the pinched ends, so I can see how attach? And a closeup of the area where the material rolls up to? Also, what material did you use? Sorry for so many requests, but I really like the top.
