i'd always be scared to hit a deer going to fast head on. i remember back in school one day we had some science magazine where i think a dodge durango had hit a deer head on and the thing was thru the windshield.
*edit*
just fount pictures of it on google.

just be glad you got away with your life, the 4runner is always replaceable.

Death didnt buy it from me, one of my friends is taking it off my hands and im helping him swap the motor/tranny in his 89 PU.
and the ticket was mailed to me via traffic cam, it has a sensor that tells it to take a picture if someone is in the intersection during a yellow, and they just happened to catch me when it turned red and i was on the white line.

How did the roof cave in so bad if the deer went throught the window?
In case you don't know, but that stuff on the roof is... well.. you know.
I've heard from motorcycle guys that hit dear getting covered in "stuff" is common. But there are several guys out there that have hit a deer straight up with a bike, lived, and rode it home.
I rather take my chances hit the deer head on than the alternative. I have given this much thought and have had many close calls with deer on my motorcycle. It may destroy the bike, but its better than going in a ditch or laying it down, or hitting another car.

Sorry to hear about your loss and the roll over, but I'm happy to hear that you are OK, with all your limbs and digits still intact.
I've always told my wife, if something is in the way, we don't swerve, we just run it over.
So what to do now about off-roading.......
Take the money you get from the insurance and parts and
Buy MINE!

Lower cars\trucks have more of a problem of things going through the windshield then higher trucks. You hit something low and it's going to go up. Just like in football, take them out below their knees and they can only go in the air. I knew a woman in Haines who hit a moose. It went up and in and now she's in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. A lot fo semi trucks up here have huge bumpers \ grill work on them. Looks more like a front of a train then a truck. They hit a moose and they don't even slow down. Just keep going down the road and hope you aren't the next car behind them because that moose is still flopping around in the middle of the road. I would have to say chances are if any 4Runner hits a deer, it wont go up and in the windshield. You may catch air when it goes under your tires, but generally speaking that is still better then hitting a ditch, tree, rock, ... when you try to swerve.

yea, good point. i'd slow down as much as i could and maybe just try to hit it at an angle if the option is open, but with something like that i wouldn't have to much time to react.
off-topic but is moose a big problem in alaska with being in the road?

HUGE problem with moose on the road. I've driven the Al-Can Highway twice in the last two years, and I was told by pretty much everyone who had knowledge on moose vs. vehicles NOT to travel at night, because moose (and other animals) will be on the road and you won't see them until it's too late.
With moose, they sit about 12 feet tall. A bumper will most likely hit them about the knee, so the whole 1000+ pound body "falls" into the cabin. Needless to say, it's one of the reasons for deaths on the road in northern BC... I was scared, to say the least, when it became dusk.
I was also told they hang out on the road at night because it's warmer than the brush they stand on...

K-Beach Road near here has a sign that keeps count of the moose killed on it. Last time I looked, the number was 151. They like to stay near the roads durning the winter (once several feet of snow is on the ground) because it's easy for them to move around for food. Twelve feet is one fricking huge moose!! Most around this area their backs are at the 7 foot range. But yes, moose have Very Long Legs, so unless you're in a monster truck your bumper is going at it's belly or below...

It runs! i spliced the battery cables back together and hooked it to the battery through jumper cables. Now with the battery in the seat next to me, i was driving up and down my neighborhood. The motor sounds just find and theres really no noises that would indicate something wrong with the driveline.
Ill have a video soon. Just another example of how tough yotas are!

My condolences. I hit a patch of black ice this past winter and went for one hell of a ride. I really don't know what kept me from going over. After all was said and done the only issues I have is a dented front bumper and some cracked light lenses. I got very, very lucky.
