Too lazy to look in the manual...

Does my 2002 3.4l have a timing chain or belt? What is the recomended time to have it changed?

For that matter, what are the big things that I can do to insure that my rig lasts forever. Since I am a new parent, this is probably the last new truck I will ever own...ever!

Timing BELT, and it's non-interfearance, I'll let someone else fill in the rest of the blanks!

non-interference = if it were to break..... your pistons wont hit the valves (Honda)

and yes, you have a Belt on the 3.4L. You can safely wait till 90k to replace the belt, if the water pump makes it that long.

Jay

p.s. Changing your oil is the biggest and most important task to insure your vehicle lasts a long time. This goes for all the fluids.

Engine oil - every 3,750.
Drivetrain oils - every 15,000.
Coolant - every 30,000.

Hey Tomus, I know what you mean about being a new parent and that being your last new truck. My girlfriend (well unofficial fiance ) is pregnant with our first, and our little girl (we're having a girl) is due in earyl February. So I figured that I should get a new truck while I had the chance while I still could So that's one of the reasons why I just bougt my new 2002 Xterra.

As far as making it last forever, I'd listen to Jay. I'm still in the process of breaking in the engine of my Xterra (610 miles as of today) but once I hit 1000 miles (maybe a little before that) I'm going to change the oil and filter, and I might also change my transmission fluid just in case.
