I was at a tire place today and saw that new Firestone in the flesh. Looked MIGHTY aggressive (read: loud on pavement). Got prices on everything. For a 33x12.5R15 mounted and balanced:

BFG AT: $145
BFG MT: $159
Goodyear MTR: $182
Firestone Dest MT: $156

I thought these #'s were reasonable.

BTW, I'm on my second set of BFG AT's.

having had the bfg a/t's before and the m/t's now, for offraoding I definately prefer the m/t's. on-road I like the hum as I drove down the road and the light rumble as I come to a stop light. they are a bit softer than the a/t's though so if your going to be hardly ever on the trails, i'd say stick to the a/t meats. I like bfg's over anything else but the next set I'm going to try the goodyear m/t's because of the opinions of my comrads on this site.

sams ATD's

Has anyone tried the Goodyear Wrangler AT/D's. They have a nice aggressive tread pattern. The only place I have been able to find them was Sam's Club. I have a set of 31's on my truck and if anyone is interested I will take a picture and post it. These have been great in the snow (had alot of it this year to try them in), rain, and good dry road traction
I have the same tire....i believe that the reason they are only at sams is because since sam's club sells them cheaper the manufacture changes the name and part number just a little so that other places won't be undersold...like if sears said 'you can't beat our prices' you can't go to them and say they are cheaper at sam's because technically they are a different tire but really they are the same.....i think i read that in consumers report from last oct or nov or dec....not sure

but i have used mine in mud snow and ice and i have been really impressed....and they were only 93 each plus 8 to install....sears wanted 750 in all and sam's only charged like 425 after tax

Got a nice set of MT's (I can not remember the brand, but I think they are the old Cooper MT's (very agressive)

32"'s for $300 like new.. But someone is supposed to buy them this weekend.. if they don't they are mine!!

BTW.. I found a place to sell me at these costs.

Firestones at $133.39
BFG MT's $153.51
Cooper Discoverer ST $128.63 (a little more of a mild MT)
Yokohama Geolander MT $140.88(don't really like the look of the tread)
Dunlop Mud Rover (I love these tires.. but at $151.20 )
Continental Conti-Trac MT ($124.80 Anyone ever seen these?? I can not find a photo!!)

I'm probably getting some of the new Firestone Destination. I talked to a guy that said they've been running them on all their public works trucks that pack on the miles and he says they are having really good success with them as far as wear.

Go for the BFG TA/KO's. A friend of mine has them on his 99 4runner and has been raving about the same set for many years/ miles, and they still have lotsa tread. I got a slightly used set for my 1st gen, and they rock on road, in snow, and dirt roads. No serious off roading yet through. Wait for a sale or a deal as BFG has been charging extra for their well deserved reputation.

Definately don't get the MT's, they'll be gone way too fast.

I second the bfg a/t choice as I had a set of 275/75r16's prior to the m/t's I have now. they do indeed last a long time. Mine lasted for 60k and still had plenty of tread on them when I replaced them last august. if you do alot of offroading in thick mud, go for the m/t's, they clear better so you get more traction. we have really thick clay like mud here and the a/t's were a nightmare when I would get into it. with the m/t's I go right through and hardly spin the tires like I would have to with the a/t's. stay with the a/t's if your mostly on the road though.

Is the old Style Goodyear M/T still available. I saw some on a TJ today (best wrangler I've ever seen) and they look like a good compromise between a M/T and A/T. Very similiar lug pattern to the X-terrain, but less space between lugs. I'd be interested if they still had it, and didn't Jack up the price like Goodyear does on everything else.

Hey, I am on my second set of BFG A/Ts. They are a great tire...even with my aggressive driving, they last for a long time. I would recomend them, however, when it comes time for me to buy tires again, i think I may chose something else. The set i have now cost me just over $800, with mounting and lifetime balance. I used to off-road a lot more, and I really haven't been much in a long time. I love the way the tires look on my car, but i think it may be time to go with something a little more practicle. Plus, the tires are really heavy, which the car a little less responsive. Does any one know off a less aggressive tire, that looks and perfoms well?

Hey man, I have the same truck as you, 99 4runner highlander. I have had the stock tires (goodyears i think???), TSL SSRs (you don't want these), and currently have 35" MT/Rs. Everyone loves the MT/Rs, you just have to figure out if that is the right choice for you. If you want an aggressive tire, it is a good choice. Good luck dude...

I hear ya' on that. I have 31" BFG AT's on my 1st Gen. Great for summer when I'm not street driving the truck as much and 'wheeling a lot more.

But I think I will run something different next winter. I'm not wheeling in the winter, and I could use the better mpg and power. I'm not loving the BFG's in the snow either. Compared to the snow tires I run on my Protege, they are spin city.

4 cheap, 235/75-15 light truck snows would be nice for those months.

you should look into the 31 inch uniroyal m/t's. That is what i have on my Tacoma and they are nice, kinda rough riding but with good wheels it'll look nice.
