chad,

as evidenced by your other spark plug thread, you really need to search.

Usually do, doesn't always turn up something usefull. If it does i don't ask. If i new ALL of the car terminolgy i could get better results. Searching for spark plugs didn't give me the answer... just other peoples problems, which helps me learn about their problems, but not mine... I will try harder, and ask more questions from friends, if that keeps clutter down here

What years of taco's and 4runners have the same axle, I have a 96 limited automatic. Anybody know offhand what gears I would want? What about if I went with 33's.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the last 6 pages, and i'm not going to bother reading them, but some shops i've called up for quotes will only charge small fee's for wiring selectable (e-locker and ARB) lockers if you have your re-gear and locker installation done at the same time. If you go with a lunchbox locker where no wiring/plumbing is required, they oftentimes don't charge any extra at all. Once again, that's assuming you are getting a re-gear done, because they have to re-set the r&p and all that good stuff anyway.

I personally wouldn't set up a r&p or locker myself, but I would pull the third member out of the rear and disconnect the front diff from the CVs and wiring and bring the third member and front pumpkin to a shop for a bench install. The labor charges for bench installs go from 150 and up per axle. That would save you alot of money and still give you a warranty on the precision labor (setting up gears).

just an idea! It's what I plan to do.. ARBs all the way i like to drive fast and when my mom drives my truck I don't want her taking corners real hard with her foot on the brake, tearing up the auto-locker.

Bob, great avatar. Loved Ronal Reagan! I like the way they make it look like that Cuban commie Che Guevara.

I put a detroit in the rear of my 92 runner, and it's great. I would have to agree with the guy that said you have to learn how to drive again, but it was worth it 100%. I enjoy not having to worry about turning it off, or turning it on, worrying about the air hoses leaking, electricicty issue's. Over-all I would recomend a Detroit to anyone. And the Detroit replaces the carrier for your ring gear, and it is commen for the carrier to go bad on high milage vehicles.
Also Detroit will hold up to the abuse of hard wheel'n with bigger than stock tires, where tru-trac and lock right don't suggest anything bigger than 33's.

I think if it was me, I would go with a Detroit or Aussie locker in front and a selectable in back to keep on-road driving normal, but off-road driving awesome. Do you guys with Detroits have uneven tread wear?

Nothing noticable at the moment as far as tire wear is concerned, but I have only had in there since october. Actually I think the tires are wearing more evenly do to the fact that instead of one tire trying to push the truck, they both are. But only time will tell. And as long as your not standing on the skinny pedal (the gas pedal) the locker disengages when going around corners, so there is no tire cherping going on when turning.

Try to find the entire rear axle housing assembly out of a 4Runner, along with the Locker ECU, and switch.

that would be the best way to do it.

I've been running a Lock Right in the rear end of my FJ40 for 4 years now and I don't have any problems with it on snow and ice. The clicking can get annoying, but you shouldn't have any problems with it in a LWB 4Runner, and as long as you don't drive like a douche bag.

jj,

you can always call toyota's national customer service line and just give them your VIN number. they'll tell you.

here's a helpful link that'll help you find out what gears your running

http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

I already know i'm gettign a lockright for the rear axle (looking for one now) but what about the front? My 4 runner has 4WD ADD (not the sickness either)
I've heard a locker can be installed and that it can't. Anyone have a definte answer?

Yeah, you can install a locker on an IFS runner without a problem... alot of people here run ARB's. In fact, I think robinhood is selling a 4.88 ARB front housing, though I could be wrong.

thnks 91 for the info, I want to get a lunchbox locker for both the F/R. Right now I don't want to mess with everything that goes into an ARB or Detroit lockers. Something that isn't so expensive and I can install myself, either a lockright or Aussie locker is what I want. Eventually though I will have to regear and upgrade lockers then, I only have 4.10's in mine right now.

I'm hitting the trails tomorrow with some guys from TTORA and I'm going to see how 4x4 with open diffs runs.
