i need a truck,i really like the drivetrain my 98 limited 4runner has, i am thinking of selling the runner and getting a tacoma,is there any common problems or things i should be looking for while i am searching?also do they get about the same milage as the 4runners,i will be using it to tow my rhino and sons small atv in the bed,i have already looked into some tundras and they are just too expensive at this point,plus milage wont be as good when i am using it as a daily driver not towing,thanks for any info

 

tacoma get pretty bad axel hop wen it loses traction and thats about all i can think of

 

i always thought 4runners were better for towing.

 

I went from a 99 4runner to a 04 DC Tacoma and no regrets. Axle wrap is common to Taco's but nothing really to worry about. 04's are known for having a squeeky dash when off roading. It's annoying but thats it. What year are you looking for?

 

really am looking into late 90's to 02 or 3 before the body change

 

leaf springs....check to see if the are broken and if its a 2.7 check the exhaust manifold for a crack

 

i have a dble cab 02 4x4 taco and love it.. they arent that comfortable (seats) but they are pretty tough. i tow a 21ft bass boat with no issues. just take it out of OD and if you are on hilly terrain switch on the "power" mode and roll with it.. gas mileage (85% hwy- 15% city) i get around 20 mpg.. depends on temp outside (thats right i said temp) and a few other variables..
