I have 4.30's as well and I can definetly feel the 35's at times, but, to tell you the truth, I didnt feel any difference between 33's and 35's....maybe just braking distance and going up hills on the hiway.

As for tires, I like the MTRs. Compared to the BFG MT's they are smooth as silk on road, and I haven't felt any real difference offroad.

I've had my bfg m/t km's for about a month now, and have put over 2000miles on them and am very impressed. I still get 18mpg (lower rpm's on the freeway) and the accel. hasnt hurt much. Road noise is the same as A/t's (until you hit 90mph but everything is loud then) and i had the truck PACKED with camping gear and a load of hardwood and they did great the whole way (went up to algonquin for the weekend)

I say go w/ the SSR's. I think the Cooper's are over-rated and don't really know anything about the MTZ.

It would be very foolish to run swampers if the rig is used to tow. Swampers suck on wet roads. For a trail only vehicle.... Swampers are fine.

however, if you do regear, you should consider staying at 5.29's and not go higher due to strength issues. with that said, at BEST, you'll see comparable power as if you had 32's on stock 4.10's (or 33's on 4.56's like me) if you're running 35's on 5.29's. it's not a great combo for towing.

BTW: I voted for the MTZ. Badass tire. I would have gotten them a fewmonths back when I was buying if I wouldn't have found such a killer deal on the new MT/R's that I picked up.

No regear-I will still have more gear than stock. Stock was 28.4" tires and 3.90 gears. It will be less towing ability than what I have now-one reason I am looking at the Mickey T's at 34.5"-a small difference from 35", but a difference nonetheless. A 35" tire and 4.88's is equal to stock in my case.

I have found some "blem" MTZ's for $180/tire-maybe I could talk them down some?

I have also found some 35x10.50x15 Swamper SSR's that are barely used for $750 plus shipping for 5 tires.

I have heard that the Coopers are a really hard tread compound and may not be great for rocks.

My 35's are easier to turn and brake than my 33's ever were... but my 33's were TSL Bias..... my 35's are BFG Muds....

Not true on a SSR (Super Swamper Radial), VERY true on a TSL Bias. I had some TSL radials that were AWESOME on snow/ice/rain... actually one of the best tires I have ever owned (32x10.50 TSL Radial)..

Low range might be used on occasion when towing if starting on a hill and then shift on the fly back to 2wd when I get going 20 or so.

I agree with someone above that a front locker or dual cases would do more for you. I think that you THINK you need more ground clearance, but I have wheeled 31" BFG AT's EXTENSIVELY, on hard trails (equivalent of blacks at Paragon) on an SFA rig (read: very low center ground clearance) and I have discovered that it is not tire size that will hold you up, it is the ability to go slow and the ability to make all 4 tires turn. I have outwheeled guys on 35's on 31's w/ 2 lockers. Is ground clearance good? Of course it is, however, it is not as much of a requirement as lockers and dual cases. Also, with 35's you are going to have very little room to flex, less flex=better chance of flopping. I say stick with 33's, lock it up and do dual cases.

All of that would be future mods, right now clearance is key, it is what keeps stopping me. Haven't had a need for the front locker, although if I had one then I could throttle it less. The crawler would be really nice with the 5spd I have-that would yield way more control.

Another thing to consider is the weight of the tire.

Tire weights:

Cooper-????

MTZ-64 pounds

SSR-?????? been told around 75 pounds

My current 285 BFG's weigh around 58 pounds I think

Just checked NTW's website and they have a shipping deal on Mickey T tires right now-any 4 radial Mickey T tires mounted on any wheels-shipping is only $60 total to me.

4 -315 MTZ's on 4 16x8 Classic II wheels with caps and nuts mounted and balanced and shipped to me is only $1410 and then buy an extra wheel for $116 and get a used tire locally for a spare for about $20 and I'm on my way.

Next question would be if I do go with 16's and not the SSR's on 15's-is my only wheel choice going to be Mickey T Classic II's b/c I will need that extra backspacing to clear these tires (backspacing is 3.625"). The rockcrawler steel wheels are 4.25".

You live in the south, get the swampers. I have one, it's a nice tire.

I sorta wish I had 5 of them, but I only have one for a spare.

I have a love/hate relationship with the MT/R's. Currently I'm in the hate mode. But last year I was in the love mode. Maybe after Moab I will like them again.

Here's another one for you. How about BFG Muds? Better Qualtiy (Michelin) and mud for the deep dirty south.

I have some 28's BFG Muds on my work truck and I really like them. But a swamper is a swamper and like no other.

My tube buggy/jeep/thing will get 38" swampers, MT/R's are not going to be an option there.

Perhaps some more practice in picking lines would be useful then.

MT/R's are a crappy mud tire. Last I checked, you had mud in the south.

I have seen 3 pairs of SSR's chunk to the point of no return in less than 1000 miles.

That leaves Cooper, don't know anything about them.

With respect to gears, you have an auto tranny, right? Don't think the extra gearing would hurt in your situation. I have the same driveline and run 37's. I ran 33's with 5.29's and a lighter rig. Everyone said it was too much. Apparently the truck didn't care. Tranny is a big deal with a powerful engine that lets you fudge the clutch.

The towing part is a bugger. You have a trail truck that is not quite. It is only offroad except when it is towing a pretty siginicant trailer. I would debate a real bomber tire like a TSL and ditching the trailer.

BFG's would probably be my first choice, but I thought that the size
34.8" x 12.3" might be a little much for clearance with only a 1" bodylift. Guess I could always tub the wheelwells, huh? The 315 Coopers, MTZ's, and the Yoko's you had are all only 34.5" tall and narrower than the BFG's. I don't really want MTR's-they are the same size as the BFG's and between those two I would get the BFG's.

My only concern with the SSR's is sidewall strength-what's your opinion on that?

Still think I'll tow the trailer OK with 4.88's, 5spd, 35's and grossing over 9000 pounds between 4Runner and camper when towing?
