Are these ok rims?

Hey all,

I've been rim shopping lately and was wondering what you all thought about the Mickey Thompson Classic II rims. I'm planning on getting 15x8. Are they pretty good quality? What's is the back spacing? Will these fit my 4Runner? Does anybody know how far out from my fender they will come (if at all)? I'd like to keep the tire pretty much inside the fender, but I'll probably be getting some fender flares, so that would help that too.

Pic and description of the rim: http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/wheels.html

Well, thanks in advance. Have fun.

BTW, what I should have said was what does back spacing mean? That probably wasn't very clear.

I think they cost somewhere around $100 each. Give or take a bit. Some 4x4 magazine I was looking at had them and some 31x10.5 tires for about $800 (I think) for the whole set. Not bad.

Well, have fun.

Yes, those are sweet rims. Truth be told, these are what I'm going to get when I upgrade my tires--in a 16x8 though.

The only thing is they are polished and not clear coated. I'm going to clear coat them when I get them. I've read that polished wheels require more maintenence--I'm guessing because they don't have that extra layer of protection that a clear coat would.

Backspacing is the distance from the edge of the inner part of the rim and the wheel mounting surface. Lay a straight edge across the diameter of the wheel and meaure the distance down to the mounting surface. Make sense? Probably not the way I explained it.

Will they fit yours? They'll fit, but the 15x8s looks like they have a relatively small back space that will push them to a wider stance than what a larger back space would and may rub if you stuffed your wheel. Someone else with a 2nd gen will have to give you a better answer.

I've checked these out

I'm going to go for the Challenger Model when I upgrade. I think those will look HOT on my Runner. You need 6 lug on 5 1/2 with 3 5/8 backspacing (I got that off of their chart - hope it's right). Made by Alcoa. Super strong.

A word of caution on clear coating. I've had a number of custom wheels over the years, some with clear coat and some without. What happens over time with uncoated wheels is they get dull. Break out the Mothers polish and bring some elbow grease. Then they look like new again. With clear coated wheels, the coating will eventually get nicked and scratched. With time, these scratches make the wheels appear to have a haze. You can wax them to slow down the process, but eventually they will look beat. I've stripped clearcoat off of more than one set of wheels to give them a good polishing. Major PITA. The more intricate the wheel, the worse it is. I'm in the snow/salt/rust belt though, so this is probably worse case.

Hey, thanks for all your help. I guess I'll be getting these as soon as I get $$. If I understand correctly, the higher the backspacing measurement the narrower the stance. Am I right? Is 2000lb enough load capacity? I'm thinking it should be as I will probably not put 2 tons of stuff in my Runner.

Have fun.

Hey all,
Does anybody know the backspacing for the 1st and 2nd gen Toyota 4 spoke rims. What about the load rating?

Thanks, have fun.

Hey DH6, I've got 15x8 on mine and they do stick out a bit from the fender well but if you are getting some fender flares then they will not be a problem. Not sure what my backspacing is.

Yes, the higher the backspacing, the narrower the stance. I think most would agree though that a little wider stance looks mega-cool!

And, yes, a 2,000 lb load rating is sufficient.

They do look pretty cool. Nice wheels. They will really compliment your 4Runner. :fireman:
