Tacoma frame rust - How many people cashed in?

Just out of curiosity how many people cashed in on toyota's frame rust problem with the tacoma's or are cashing in?

I am not talking the 1 person had his 150% blue book buyback, I am talking multiple buy backs buy the same person or people.

Me personally I want a tacoma to drive. Any tacoma I see for sale and I call on it, it is sold and I mean, sold within the day. Granted I am in WI, and I can travel out of state to get one, and it would be beneficial since there is no rust.

No need to name names, but does anyone else think this is going on?

EDIT: I thought the original rule was you had to have the truck registered in your name before the recall started to get the 150% buy back deal but I may be wrong. If it wasn't, you could only get back what you payed for the truck.

Believe it or not, goat...I only found out about this 3-year-old buyback program just yesterday after crawling around underneath our 1998 SR5 to prepare to replace some starter contacts. When I saw how bad the frame was rusting, I did a little research and sure enough our VIN was listed in the original announcement and we have some penetration of the frame.

Cha-ching! Now we can get rid of this POS bucket of rusted bolts and beams and put a few bucks into the GTP...courtesy of "ohhhhhh, what a feeling...Toyota!"

I also know for a fact, it does not matter if the truck was registered the day before the inspection or how long you owned it, only that it is currently registered.

All it states is it has to be registered and not a salvage title.

Local 96 toyota tacoma for sale here that I went to see last night. The guy said he had about 20 calls a day for 4 days. Every person that came (total of about 30) and looked at it left due to he got side swipped and the rear 1/2 of the frame was gone. You could not really tell in the pics, just the box was missing.

He wanted $500 bucks for a running 3.4 5 speed, sr5, basically a mint truck from the gas tank forward. I drove it onto the trailer in front wheel drive with no rear axle sliding on the gas tank.

I bought it for a trail rig or for a engine swap into something else. You can't tell me the 30 people who came and left mad, were not thinking on the way there "oh, I am going to cash this in for $9000". He said people literally were pissed that he wasted there time, blah blah blah.

This is the best info I've seen on the 95-2000 recall: http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=95993 BTW the 2001-2004 recall is different:

Well I re-read the official docs and a lot of that thread over on TTORA and I can't find now where that "registered before the announcement" came from. I just remembered it, so maybe it wasn't true. It would have made sense for Toyota to do something like that, but all I see for sure is that dealers couldn't get the 1.5 times KBB deal, only documented costs. So, maybe that explains the mad rush to buy your local Tacoma.

Care to share how you "know for a fact"?

Thanks for that post over at the TTora website, goat. In fact, that was one of the first hits I came across yesterday when this buyback program first came to my attention. Great links you posted there a few years back when this whole thing started.

I've read 3 different things now...we'll get back 1.5x retail...1x retail...or what we originally paid which was somewhere in between. Guess we'll just have to visit the dealer to find out.

My g/f bought the Taco about 2-3 months after the rust recall. Interesting thing...she bought it from the Flagstaff Honda dealer...who the local Toyota dealer just bought out last month...so it should be interesting.

I wonder if the Honda dealership knew about the recall when they sold it to her in the spring of '08...since dealers were not eligible for the buyback?

Poor Dana...

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/18/r...tacoma-frames/

Says here they also make axles & driveshafts. Maybe they made our driveshaft...that sucker is also coated with rust as well.

Gonna get us a little of that $25 mill starting next week, methinks.

I can't take credit for those, ShowStop (TTORA moderator) added those later.

Yeah Dana made the whole rolling chassis IIRC, not the best quality IMHO.

Actually its not really a recall, its an extension of the frame warranty to 15 years, so 95 is already out of the warranty and 96 will be soon.

The 2001-2004 have a different deal, they either replace the frames if its too bad or if not bad they spray on some undercoating stuff.

Am I correct in assuming that the majority of rusted out frames will be up north in the "salt belt"? My bro in law has a 98 taco in Atlanta and I was telling him about this recall, but I seriously doubt his is rusted out.

Probably, the areas near the ocean also have more than normal rust issues. Ever seen the cars in Hawaii LOL?

The vehicle doesnt not have to be registered in your name before the recall. I bought a 95 off a guy and it passed the frame test when he owned it and 2 years later it failed when i owned it. Toyota bought it back for 150% of KBB value in excellent condition. My 2000 frame is rusted out as well, i bought it last may. The dealer told me I needed to own the truck for a year before they would buy it back. He wasnt 100% sure and told me to bring it in anyway to get tested and see what Toyota said i could do.
