so my wife called tonight and said that the 2002 4runner we have won't go into reverse or drive. the car has been in 4wd for a couple of days because we just got about 15in of snow. i told her to take it out of 4wd but it wouldn't disengage. also she said that it would grind when trying to put in drive. any suggestions???

 

That light comes on for me when the transfer case is in neutral.

Can she get it back into 4WD with the 4x4 indicator light on the dash staying solid? Is it possible that the transfer case selector is somewhere in between neutral and 4LO?

 

Make sure she disengages the center diff lock before trying to pull the truck our of 4wd.

 

Definitely check the transfer case. into Park. Turn the truck off. the transfer case into Neutral then into 2Hi. Start the truck. It is possible the t/c selector was knocked out of gear. You can't get it back into gear without some grinding.
