Just looking for some help with diagnosing a slight problem I'm starting to experience with my 4Runner.

For about a year now, the idle is not always where it should be. Occasionally, I'll place the transmission in park after a drive (engine at normal operating temp) and the idle will be way too high. A blip to the throttle and it drops down to where it should be.
It hasn't bothered me enough to fix it but now when the engine is cold there is abnormal hesitation. I'm guessing the two symptoms are related and am wondering if a throttle position sensor sounds like the culprit to you guys.

 

Try cleaning your throttle body and throttle body plate. You can check your sensor by checking its Ohm readings. good luck

 

I would do these and also check the IAC valve (sometimes it will stick and needs cleaning).

 

I have a multimeter, so I'll give that a try first on the TPS sensor. Thanks guys.

 

My Tacoma i had was doing the samething. Eventually the Check Engine light came on, and it was the TPS.

 

I checked the TPS and the IAC valve with an ohmmeter and both seem to be ok. I cleaned the throttle body so we shall see what happens.

 

i just got the same problem today with a CEL PO120. my question is how do i start to check what is wrong on a 3.4l engine. ive seen 4 crawlers website i've even seen the FSM for the tacoma but the engine configs are different than a 4runner. anyone with a 3rd gen have this problem and what exactly did you do? how would you check the TPS with a volt meter. pics are helpful. sorry to hi jack but i saw so many TPS started but none helped.
