So, my very first impression was "wow, I like this!" but when the dust settled, I'm thinking it looks small. Though I know at least some of the aesthetics of that are coming from it being a different color than the hood. Also, that glaring chrome intake screen isn't helping.

I don't think I'm going to do the grafting thing, basically 'cause by the time I buy two and give it to a real body guy, I'd bet that he could fab something from scratch for less work.


In the aftermath of me looking at this last night, I found another pre-fab scoop that is about 5" wider at the opening, but just as long. I think it might look too squat, but it was worth a few bucks to try.


Opening front/back... I like the classic looks of the opening to the front, but in terms of cooling, I think that it will work better with the opening to the rear. QSV had the physics covered pretty well. I think it makes more sense to give heat a path to come up and out, versus trying to force air down and across, thus pushing the heat out the bottom.

Color wise... I like the contrast of a non color-matched scoop, but I don't like the glossy sheen of the black - I can't have the scoop shinier than the truck!. If I go this aftermarket route, then I'll repaint the scoop flat black, or an "eggshell" finish, or just hit it with some fine sandpaper to knock down the shine.


Back to pondering now...

 

Consider putting the forward facing scoop to push air in and adding louvers to let the hot air escape/be pushed out such as in the pics attached to this thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...highlight=hood

Or just put in the louvers and let the natural air flow push the hot air up and out.

 

I like that you guys are thinking otu of the box. Quick thought on front versus back facing scoop for heat removal:

back facing - matches up with natural convection

front facing - forced convection.

I wish I knew more about the aerodynamics of our rigs - or cars in general. That is, is there enough turbulence flowing along the underside, that by adding a vent (or rear facing scoop) to the hood, you will get "substantial" forced convection through the engine bay?

If so - I personally believe flat vents look better (than a rear facing scoop).

Alternatively - if the hood scoop faces forward - will the conventional wisdom that air will be "forced" into the bay be correct? Or is there (At high speeds) aerodynamic issues along the bottom of the car that will keep the forced air flow lower than we might expect?

A lot of this seems like the age old question about driving pickup trucks with the tailgate up or down.

Oh, and BTW the full answer is probably something like Wide hood scoop facing front near the front of the hood, flat vents towards the back of the hood (or rear facing scoop), and fender vents along the side (or wheel well vents with appropriate louvers to keep mud/water from spraying the engine).

Go for the factory scooped hood . I opened the front and there is a wobble as speeds increase. Be careful if you're going to graft one on - check out where the the bracing on the underside is.

Hey Joyce! From what I've seen, the sport hood won't fit the 96.


I dunno that I like the look... It also seems to be a lot of opportunity for water to get in everywhere, including dripping right on top of the fuse panel on the driver's side.

It might look ok. Ebay has a variety of vents. I'm sure you'll find a pair that matches your taste.

As far as water goes... Perhaps install one vent on the passenger side?

Go a bit bigger/wider.

 

I think there's enough of a difference in the grill lines to confuse the matching of the nose of the hood.

If so you might just find a good body guy and have him graft on the scoop part of a replacement sport hood (ie not the OEM sport hood, just you're typical $120 cheapo replacement hood). I don't think it will be that hard since the hoods may have slightly different curves, but overall the sheetmetal should be flexible enough to compensate.

 

Yeah, I'm not necessarily diggin where he placed them either, but I do like the idea of getting heat out from under the hood. Perhaps more up in the center and towards the windshield as much as the bracing would allow.
