Sugestions for new brakes...

Hey guys, got a question here for evrybody:

It hasn't been too long ago, less than 20,000 miles, that i had new brakes put on my 4Runner. Now, their sqeaking and squealing like there's no tomorrow, especially in stop-and-go traffic in town; i think the shop that did them before didn't to too good of a job! So my question is what do you all recommend for new brakes? I mean, i can't go and get some brembos or willwoods, but i need some suggestions on some good new brakes and what places are the best for doing brake jobs; i would do it myself, but i'm in college and don't have the tools/space to do it. thanks, and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Put some anti-squeal lube on the pads (the back, not the front). It could be the pad material, which if it is, and the squealing really bothers you, just get some new OEM pads. Be grateful you don't have the warping problem.

anti-squeal lube? could you go into more detail on this please, as it be all i need to do for the fix. and yes, i'm definitely glad my rotors are not warped! and i'm not sure about the tundra upgrade, so i'll do some searching on that one...

The Tundra upgrade consists of changing out the entire front brake components (calipers, rotors, pads). Kind of expensive, but if you've got the funds, time and tools, why not?

You can go to any autoparts store to get the anti-squeal lubes. Your brakes may squeal from the pads vibrating in the calipers. The anti-squeal lube (pretty thick stuff) helps stop the vibration.

yeah, being in college right now, i don't have the funds for all the components that go into the tundra upgrade. but is all you have to do is take off the tire and "spray" that stuff where the directions say to?

Take out the pads and smear it all over the BACK of the pads. You don't want that stuff on the front if you plan on stopping at a reasonable distance.

the brake job, only needed it on the front end, consisted of new pads and the rotors were turned. that's about it, and they squeal really bad and make a lot of dust, more than other 4runners out there...

I don't know about your space issue, but all you need is enough room to take off the tire. If you only want to change the pads, the only tools you need are the jack and lug wrench which you should already have (perhaps a screwdriver to get the caliper pins out). You can get the anti-squeal lube and some caliper grease for the pins for about $5-6. Changing the front pads is quite simple, do a search here, or look on 4x4wire.com which has a great write-up with pics. I changed my pads and rotors last weekend and couldn't believe how easy it actually was.

Yeah, I just got done changing out the rotors and pads 5 minutes ago. Took me about 1.5 hours. Will take me less next time. All straight forward and a great write-up is at:

You have to use size 17mm socket (instead of 14") if you have 16" wheel brake system.
