Strange noise

Greetings from the island of Trinidad in the West Indies. My 1992 Surf ssrx has a turbo diesel engine that I recently replaced, but that is not the problem. I am hearing a noise while driving that is comming from under the vehicle. It sounds as though the disc pads are worn and metal is rubbing against metal to create a whistling sound. I checked the rims for metal filing in case it is the disc pads are ther are none. Also the noise has been there for quite a while now and the brake is ok. Any suggestions?

Are the brakes worn down a good bit? Could be the wear indicator on your brakes letting you know to get new pads. Does it do it while your driving and quit when you hit the brakes? If so it's is probably the wear indicator. That's all I can think of unless someone else has an idea.

I'll have to second Jonathan's assessment. I recently changed my brakes because I was hearing a similar sound. No damage to the rotors and the brake pads looked like they could have gone for a good while longer before they did any damage.
