Stock Fan=grenade
Well, as I promised (threatened?) here is the story behind my fan and other parts replacement.
Last weekend I really went to town and cleaned up my Runner. The full treatment, buff, wax, chrome polish, wheels cleaned, interior cleaned, took the top off, and made her look nice and spiffy. So Monday, I head off to work, feeling proud of my nice shiny ride (pride before the fall??). A couple miles down the road I go to pass another truck and BAM, I thought I hit something. I see tannish colored pieces of something scatter behind the truck. I figure that I've hit a piece of wood or something, and motor on my way for a couple hundred more yards. The steering is feeling a bit stiff though, so I pulled over in a parking lot, pop the hood, and see the carnage. The fan had exploded, blowing the shroud to itty bitty pieces, cutting a power steering line, blowing a large hole completely through part of the airbox, smashing up the radiator, putting a few small dents in the hood, and finally spraying the entire engine bay with ATF. Life isn't very fair.
Anyway, that's why I put on a Flex-A-Lite. I might have gone with the Taurus mod, but I didn't see it until after I had ordered the FAL, oh well. I also ordered an intake from Downey, has anybody else gotten one from them? How is it?
And that's the whole sordid story, thnks for all the help figuring out my fan problem, I really appreciate it.

Sorry to hear about that, sounds expensive. By the way, what model of Flex-A-Lite did you fit, I'm thinking of putting one on my Diesel Surf/4Runner to replace the standard clutch type one - bit more simplicity, bit more space. The Diesel is renowned for having overheating problems if everything isn't just so, so I need one with as much airflow as possible. I'm not too worried about the noise as the standard one isn't quiet anyway.

I used a Flex-A-Lite ,model 165. I'm not sure how well it works yet, as I'm still waiting for my intake. It wasn't cheap, but I got what I've been wanting for awhile, with the electric fan, and new intake. It sucks it had to be this way, but oh well I guess. My rig also got all new belts, and a new top radiator hose, so she should be good to me for awhile, I hope.

I've had the Downey intake for a while now and there is a noticeable performance improvement. I also installed the Flex-A-Lite not too long ago and the gains felt pretty much equal. The Downey header and complete exhaust system will give you the best increase in horsepower.
