Stereo install on Double DIN 2002 4runner

This is my first post --- woohoo. Question is simple, answer may not be.

I have a stock 2002 4runner Stereo/CD/Cassette in Double DIN size. However, I'd like to pull it out and replace it with a regular MP3 player (single DIN).

Do I need some kind of kit (i.e. what happens to the empty space that will now appear below)?

Any step by step instructions on how to install and what kits are needed would be appreciated.

By the way, this forum rocks....I've done some mods, but wife is limiting the rest.

I have a jvc-kdsh99 in place of my double DIN. I had it installed on my '01 after a few months of owning it. The installer used a mounting bracket that had an empty compartment under the deck. You could put the empty compartment on the top and the deck on the bottom but I dont think it looks as good. Its a good compartment to throw small stuff in but nothing seems to stay there while driving.
I know there is a factory amp used by your deck now that you will have to remove.

You will need two items to install aftermarket stereo:

1. Toyota wiring harness

2. Toyota pocket

The wiring harness will let you connect your MP3 deck to the Toyota amplifier and speakers, and Toyota pocket will fill in the empty space below your new deck.

And, by the way, welcome to the Yotatech!

Thanks guys. Is there a specific mounting bracket/pocket made for 3rd gen 4runners? I don't know where to start to get one of these. I guess besides this unique part and the wiring harness, everything else should install as usual in a single DIN car.

That is correct, no special adapters needed. Just the Toyota pocket which you can buy at either BestBuy or CircuitCity and the wiring harness. Everything else mounts just right in.
