Steering wheel play in 2001 4runner
Ok, so I have searched every forum and every article I can find and I have no luck getting an answer on this...
I have a 2001 4runner with 113k miles. This weekend I ran a very lightweight trail and could feel a thumping in the steering wheel when going over rocks. It all but disappeared when on a smooth gravel road and the highway but I notice the slop much more now and it is driving me nuts.
Initially, I thought it was something in the suspension or even the steering rack but on closer examination, there appears to be a large amount of play in the upper portion of the steering shaft.
Is it common for the u-joint on the steering shaft to go out?? It just seems odd because this vehicle hasn't seen much hard use.

If you have play, go ahead and replace it.
I get an occasional "clunk" now and then if I go from far left to far right (or vice versa).
Keep in mind, the bushings wear over time....so...that energy has to go some where...

I would replace the steering rack bushing and go from there. They're common to go out and can be had for less than 20bucks through wheelersoffroad.com. They're not that bad to replace yourself either with a little elbow grease.

I'm having the same problem on my 99 even after doing a steering rack bushing kit replacement! I also replaced my drivers side inner tie rod because the shop said they couldn't align the truck. What are my next options to take care of the play??? Please help...

Inspect the rubber isolators between the rack and the hold down straps, hard to see. must be under vehicle. pry on right side of rack to check left/right play. sometimes right side rubber is missing, allowing excessive play.
