Steering Rack bushing replacement - 2000 4Runner SR5
Hi all,
I have having steering issues with my truck as the steering wheel vibrated while braking. I did a complete front brake job and replaced both outer tie rods.
However, while inspecting my front end I also noticed a lot of play (movement) in my steering rack. I confirmed that the movement was due to bad bushings on both sides.
I was searching here for some recent threads regarding this issues, but I only found very old threads.
Do you guys know if I can buy these bushings straight from Toyota? Do you guys know the part number?
Any other parts I should buy for this job?
Any advise is appreciated.
Thanks,
Marcelo

I had the same issues with shaking/vibrating under braking.
I used the Energy Suspension 8.10103G steering rack bushing kit. I don't know the OEM numbers.
That mostly solved my problem but I then tack welded the collapsible steering column as it had play in it.
Together that solved the problem.
Now the steering column will not collapse in a severe front end collision if my body hits it.
I'm not recommending anyone do that. I always wear my seat belt so I'm not worried about it.

Be careful to not get squished in any way (Captain Obvious to the rescue!) but take a look under there at the rack while someone turns the steering wheel back and forth, maybe with the motor on so the power steering is working. And see if the rack itself is moving or not.
If it's moving, replace them. If not, it's probably not your problem.
I replaced mine with poly a number of years ago when mine was wiggling a little bit.

Hi all,
I replaced my bushings with Energy Suspension part #8.10103G any my steering rack is very firm now.
Do I need to do an alignment? I did one about a month ago when I replaced my tie rod ends.
Thanks,
