Steering box is done... HELP

Opon taking apart the front end of my 88 i had some difficulties and one thing led to another and the threaded end of the splined shaft that comes out of the steering box has been somewhat destroyed... the threads are not salvageable. So what i want to know is can this peice of the box be replaced or should i buy a rebuilt one? Can i rebuild it myself?

Thanks,
Andy

Since it is already broken, take it out if your truck and take it apart. See how much work it will be to put it back together. If you do not think you can do it, then get a new or rebuilt one. Maybe even line up the steering box to the pitman arm and weld it on. The only disadvantage is that if you ever need to take the steering box off again then you would have to get a new pitman arm. Do you have power steering?

It is power steering and i dont think that i wanna weld that pitman on there. I found a rebuilt box from napa for 299. and that is the cheapest price around... anyone know of a place where i can get a cheaper one.

That's how much one from the salvage yard will run too. I've got the one from Napa following my accident and it seems to be up to par on quality. No complaints here.

You are going to need to just get another box. Toyota makes some prety sturdy gear boxes, so a junk yard is noth that bad of an idea especially if a rebuild is 3 large.

Maybe a machine shop could put new threads on it. Maybe try calling a few and see what it would cost. I just checked the Bay Area Craigslist and there are a few people parting out Toyotas and have steering boxes. E-mail them and see if they are for power steering. Here are some links:
