well i went off roading today, and when i came to a stop and turned off the engine, i came back about 10 minutes later to try and start it up and it took me 3 times to get it going. this has happened to me before and i was wondering why it has problems starting when its warmed up. i never have this problem when its cold in the morning.
BTW, its a 98 2.7L 4runner.

I've got the same problem with my 87, but its Carbed, I didn't realize some of the fuel injected ones are doing this as well. I'd be interested in knowing what's causing the problem as well.

 

I cant say I have the same problem with my truck, it seems to start right up in that same instance you talked about.

 

Is this a fuel/fire problem (turning over, but not starting) or a starter problem (click...click...)? I'm having problems with the starter when it's warm. So far, no one has been able to help and I haven't been able to figure it out myself.

 

well its good to know at least someone has the same problems as me. it does seem to be turning over, but just not starting. hopefully someone will know whats up

Casey: In the 160K miles of my '91 Runner's life, it has had 3 starting issues:

1. Starter contacts wore out and were replaced (occurred at 120K miles)...this is makes a clicking sound but the motor doesn't turn over....this doesn't sound like your problem.
2. Injector Bleed Down (occurred at 50K miles), where the fuel system would bleed down pressure through the injectors when the truck sat for a while. The heat of the engine would 'soak' into the injectors causing the injectors to crack open and bleed into the cylinders. This produced a long start situation....basically the fuel pump had to re-pressureize the fuel system...the motor turns over until the pressure gets where it needs to be and then the engine starts. This probably is not your problem.
3. Low Battery Voltage (occurred at 75K). The battery got old and would produce enough volts to turn the motor over but not enough to get the truck to fire. This could be your problem.

David, thank you for such a detailed post.
i actually think it is #2 that u described, just replaced my battery not too long ago. and i have had a feeling that it had to do with the fuel delivery when starting. your advice has been most helpful!

Have you had the timing modified any? This can do the same thing. If you have it advanced to much or have your dist. modified, as in welding the dist where the advancement is all the way advance all the time. Not saying this is your problem. But maybe somewhere to start.

 

Same things happens with my brand new 2002. It'll crank nice and fast, but just won't start. This happens when it's fully warmed up and then I let it sit for an hour or so.
It's only happened few times, so I don't want to take it to the dealer, especially since I know I won't be able to duplicate the problem.
I'm positive it's not the battery or starter. Don't know if 2.7 has the same idle speed control valve as 3.4, but that's what I'm guessing is causing this on my truck. Valve is sticking.
