start up and idle problems
hey everybody,
Ive been surfing here for a couple months just admiring everything not really posting up cause i dont have a whole lot of experience and cant do too much to my 4Runner because its my dads and im still in high school and only a 2wd. The most in depth repair ive done was rebuilding the starter but do feel capable to do more and was considering the timing belt, water pump etc.
So my ride is a 2000 3.4 Auto 2wd limited with 121,000 miles. When i start it up in the morning while its still cool(80) outside it roars to life to about 1500 rpm all by itself. The problem is on hot days here in S Florida and when the truck is already warm i turn the key it barely starts up but usually doesn't make it pass 800 rpm and then dies. To prevent it from dieing i immediately throttle it to about 1500/2000 and then it seems to recover.
Secondly, after driving and then coming to a red light it usually drops to about 600 rpm, is this normal? It hasnt died from this yet but does feel pretty weak but once i gas it it recovers fine.
So any advice? Is there an idle adjustment? thanks in advance

DOsent sound like an Idle.. sounds like a TPS(throttle position sensor) or something in that series.
600 rpm is a bit low, and if I remember correct that also has something to ds with a out of adjustment throttle body or TP
Those are just two, it could be a series of things. Bad, or stuck EGR. Slight vacumn leak, clogged injectors.. the list goes on. The problem is, the newer the runner have gotten the more compex everything is. You can figure out something on a 76 truck much easier.. has a liked 3 relays. Your 2000, well has a lot more. SO, my advice.. becuase you are about to get a ton of people posting possibilities.. which it could be.. or may not be.
Go buy the FSM(factory service manual, can download online) or a haynes or Chiltons manual, get a mulitmeter(you will need it to check sensors like the TPS) and start reading and like everyone else here that was once in Highschool a millinia ago.. LEARN. No better time than now... that way when you get old and grizzeled like us, you can take out place yelling at the young ones.
Anyway, ive been a mechanic for a long time.. and Ill tell you... things on your truck work in a series.. if any one thing goes bad.. sometimes you wont notice and sometimes you will. What you are describing, well it could be the list above and some others.
So just start tinkering and learning..
One question, next time your at a stop light when it idles down to 600 like you say, throw it in neutral; if it idles back up to around 800 -1000(where it should).. that def. sounds like a throttle body or TPS out of adjustment. Give that a test.

It might be the MAF sensor. I had idle problems and a check engine light when my MAF sensor went bad. Try cleaning it and the throttle body.
